Captain Howard Ensley commands the Court Services Division and oversees the unit’s administrative and operational aspects. He brings over 44 years of law enforcement experience to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Ensley began his career with the Murray County Sheriff’s Office in 1973 and served as Sheriff for 24 years.

He joined Gilmer County in 2013 and rose through the ranks from Court Services Deputy to Watch Commander before being promoted to Captain in 2016.

A 2001 graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, Captain Ensley is also a graduate of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Academy and the Cobb County Police Academy. He has completed over 1,900 hours of advanced training and remains active in the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association. He previously served as President of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes.

Captain Ensley is the longest-serving law enforcement officer at GCSO. He enjoys spending time on his farm and with his family when he is not on duty.

The Court Services Division of the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the judicial system and various county functions.

Deputies assigned to the Court Services Division are responsible for a wide range of duties, including:

  • Serving criminal warrants and civil process papers
  • Providing courtroom security for all judicial proceedings
  • Transporting prisoners to and from court, correctional facilities, and medical appointments
  • Providing security for county commission meetings and other official government functions

Members of the Court Services Division are available 24/7 to manage prisoner transports and respond to out-of-county transport requests as needed.

Through their professionalism and vigilance, Court Services Division deputies help maintain the security, order, and integrity of Gilmer County’s judicial and governmental operations, serving as a vital link between law enforcement and the court system.
